Every AI companion app advertises a price. Almost none of them charges exactly that price to an active user. This guide explains the pricing machinery — subscriptions, tokens, credits, renewals, and annual plans — so you can predict your real monthly cost before you enter a card number.
The two-layer model: subscription plus extras

- Layer 1 — the subscription. A recurring plan (monthly, or longer terms) that covers basic access: creating an account, chatting, and core features.
- Layer 2 — tokens or credits. A separate currency you spend on generation: AI images, voice messages, calls, and video. Plans usually include a modest allowance; beyond that, you buy more.
The advertised price is almost always Layer 1 only. Your real bill is Layer 1 plus however much of Layer 2 you use. Text-only users barely touch Layer 2; image and video enthusiasts live in it.
Why text chat is cheap and images are expensive
Generating text is computationally cheap for these companies; generating images, voice, and video is not. So the industry meters the expensive stuff. This is why two users on the same plan can have completely different bills: one chats for an hour a day and pays the sticker price, another generates dozens of images and pays several times over [verify — typical usage patterns; individual results vary].

Renewals: the price that actually matters
